Frequently Asked Questions
- What should I (and my children) wear to the service?
Our services do not require any special dress. Some people feel comfortable in very casual clothes; others prefer more dressy attire. It is an individual choice.
- Is there childcare/Sunday School during the service?
Yes, we offer both childcare (nursery) and Religious Education (RE) classes for children of all ages during the Sunday service. Visitors are welcome. The children are included in the early portion of most of our services, and then go to RE classes with their teachers.
Click Religious Education for more information.
- If my child does not separate well from me, may he/she remain with me during the service?
Children are welcome to stay with their families during the service. We have a Family Room at the rear of the Main Hall, where parents can see, hear and participate in the service, while younger children can move around and play.
- Do you have services year-round, or do you close during the summer?
Sunday services are at 10:30 AM. In general, our minister conducts two-thirds of the Sunday services. Other services are led by members of the Fellowship or outside speakers, coordinated by the Sunday Program Committee. During July and August, the services and Religious Education are noticeably more casual.
- What are the services like?
Sunday services usually have a sermon or reflection(s), congregational singing, readings, musical interludes, time for meditation or prayer and a collection. The choir may sing. The format may be different, especially during lay led services, so please visit several Sundays. A social time with coffee, tea and snacks follows the service. Visitors are encouraged to wear name tags so that members can introduce themselves and get to know the newcomers.
Click Sunday Services for more information.
- How long does a service last?
Approximately an hour.
- Do you have Rites of Passage like other religions?
Yes we do. Click Special Services for more information.
- How many members do you have?
Currently, we have around 245 members and Friends (who support the Fellowship, but have not signed the membership book).
- Are there gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people in this Fellowship and are they welcome?
Yes, we have openly gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered members in our Fellowship and they are welcome. Our Fellowship became an official Welcoming Congregation long ago. Through this Unitarian Universalist program, we became more aware of the issues the GLBT community faces and welcoming to the GLBT community.
- Are there people in the Fellowship from diverse religious/spiritual backgrounds?
We have members from many different religious and spiritual backgrounds, including Jewish, Protestant, Catholic, Buddhist, Humanist, Atheist, Agnostic, and Pagan. They are all welcome and our Sunday services and other programs/events draw from all these groups to broaden our spiritual awareness and expand our horizons.
- Do you host weddings or rent space to other groups?
Yes. Our minister is happy to officiate at weddings and other ceremonies. We have several rooms available to rent for weddings, meetings, or other purposes.
- How do I join the UUFH?
The process of becoming a UUFH member is fairly simple. After you believe the Fellowship will meet your needs, you are comfortable with us, and are willing to financially support and participate in the congregation, you indicate to our minister or president that you would like to sign the Membership Book. Signing the book is the official “act” of becoming a member. During the year, the Membership Committee and the minister offer sessions for new members and those considering membership in which you are given an overview of the Fellowship and Unitarian Universalism and have an opportunity to ask questions.
- Is your congregation accessible to people in wheelchairs?
Yes. We have members who use wheelchairs. Our building is wheelchair accessible. Also, our hymnals are available in a large-print version and we will happily enlarge the Order of Service for you.
- Do you have a hearing assistance system?
Yes. We have installed a FM Sound Enhancement system. The personal hearing enhancement equipment is available for your use. Please ask for assistance from one of the ushers or at the Welcoming Desk.
